Synopsis
Just before dawn, pro-military demonstrators confront antiwar protesters in the plaza by Berkeley's city hall. At issue is a letter endorsed by the city council which called Marines recruiters "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley. As the sun rises, so does the volume of jeers and chants. Medea Benjamin, of the anti-war activist group Code Pink, says their goal is to "restrict any future [military] recruiting in the city." Pro-military demonstrator Scott Conover, whose son was killed while serving in the Middle East, vehemently objects to the use of photos of a dead soldier on Code Pink protest placards. "It's low-life stuff," he says. "They're scumbags..." Both sides regroup after the morning live-broadcast crews shut down, but soon another tense face-off develops as a couple of young antiwar protesters are challenged by Conover for allegedly defaming Marines for committing "war crimes."
