Synopsis

Inside the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford University, Chronicle reporter Carrie Sturrock dons a motion-sensing helmet connected to a 3D graphics computer and attempts to walk across a CGI plank that spans a virtual chasm, into which she soon 'falls.' Assistant Professor Jeremy Bailenson and student researcher Jesse Fox also demonstrate a program that depicts subjects as 3-D avatars jogging on a treadmill. This experience seems to influence subjects to exercise more even after they have disconnected from the computer display. In another computer program, subjects are able to view a 3-D police lineup where they can move around the suspects who stand at the software-synthesized scene of the crime.
